I suck at interviewing
Been practicing answers even as easy as why Bank or why IB and they just don't sound good
I forget what I want to say or just pause in the middle. It isn't the same as a normal conversation where you get a couple seconds to think before speaking and don't have to speak for 2 minutes or more (HV).
I am practicing in front of my mirror (lol I know I look stupid), but how else can I go about getting better?
For context, I have spoken to many bankers on the phone and over coffee and never felt this awkward or bad at phrasing my thoughts. Is it because I have answers prepared so things aren't feeling natural?
It sounds like you're overthinking and putting too much pressure on yourself to deliver a "perfect" answer, which can make you sound robotic or unnatural. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable tips to improve your interview performance:
1. Practice with a Purpose
2. Focus on the SOAR Framework
3. Build a Story Bank
4. Cheat Sheet
5. Practice for Fluidity, Not Perfection
6. Simulate Real Interview Conditions
7. Relax and Slow Down
8. Leverage Your Networking Conversations
9. Confidence Through Preparation
10. Mindset Shift
Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Even seasoned professionals stumble during interviews. The key is to learn from each experience and keep improving. You’ve got this!

Practice with a friend or family member. If you're just staring yourself in the mirror or recording your practices it'll feel rehearsed instead of an actual conversation. Even though the HV will be like that it's better to practice speaking your answers conversationally so you can flow better in the recordings. Also your prepared answers should just be general bullet points, not word-for-word otherwise you come off as super robotic.
Hi, thanks for the tips. Will try them out!
I know it’s cliche but it helps to imagine the audience you’re speaking to. Whenever i record them I basically try to behave like a YouTuber in a way, but I’ve heard some people stick pictures of someone behind/near their camera so they can at least speak to a face
