IB and Exit Opportunities in India

I have read that most IB roles are offered only post-MBA in India? Is it true? If not, what are the target undergrads in India?

What is the compensation like? Since HFs do not exist in India, what are the best exit opportunities for us? Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about IB roles and exit opportunities in India:

  1. IB Roles Post-MBA:

    • It is true that most IB roles in India are offered post-MBA. The majority of BB IBD analyst recruiting takes place at top management institutes like the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
  2. Target Undergrads in India:

    • While the context does not specify target undergraduate institutions in India, it mentions that top engineering colleges (excluding IITs) with strong quantitative programs (math + computer science) are considered. Candidates from these institutions with above-average grades and good extracurriculars are also in the running for IB roles.
  3. Compensation:

    • The context does not provide specific details on compensation for IB roles in India. However, compensation can vary widely based on the firm, location, and the candidate's experience and qualifications.
  4. Exit Opportunities:

    • Since hedge funds (HFs) are not prevalent in India, the best exit opportunities for IB professionals typically include:
      • Private Equity (PE)
      • Corporate Finance roles within large corporations
      • Strategy roles in consulting firms
      • Entrepreneurial ventures or startups

Target undergrad colleges include top engineering colleges like IITs, BITS Pilani and commerce colleges like SRCC, LSR. Semi targets also include Christ Bangalore and NMIMS Mumbai although smaller domestic firms recruit from these and are seasonal in their recruitment process.

A1 compensation at top boutiques (Axis, Kotak, JM, etc) typically is in the range of INR 12-15 Lakh (excluding bonus).

Hope this helps.

Engineering students are taking away the finance roles too. Also, what's the comp at BBs? Do they? even hire undergrads for IB roles? What's the expected bonus at theses boutiques? Plus, any idea about Ashoka (there Eco+fin program is said to be really good)?

Comp at BB is typically 40-50L for analyst level + bonus of 70-100%. Would suggest watching Kushal Lodha’s podcast on YouTube. Capture many aspects accurately.

BBs typically don’t hire undergrads straight from college. CA with a few years of IB experience could be considered

No idea about the Ashoka program

Hey, do these boutique firms you mentioned (Axis, Kotak) hire from NMIMS? If not, can I still apply for it as an off campus thing, because as far as I know, not many roles open up online but are college/offline specific.

Anyone have experience working in the US in IBD and then moving to India a few years later? How was your experience finding a new role in finance? I have around 6 years of M&A / RX experience and am looking to move back

You could reach out to Indian counterparts of the bulge brackets banks (assuming you have US experience in those). Furthermore, Michael page, native are some recruiters known for recruiting in India IB, PE and VC industries. They post openings on LinkedIn.

As far as I know, people only move back after VP or President roles. All analysts/associates' work (majorly) is grunt. It only makes sense to move back in a VP or P role or you crack a good role in a VC/PE fund here.

VERY less. There are only  a few roles in IB after MBA from T1 unis, and close to none after undergrad. Maybe you can get a summer role but converting it into a PPO is very hard. And your resume "may get shortlisted" for these summer internships only when you are from SRCC/Hindu/St. Stephen.
