IB networking

My ultimate goal is to work in PE and am trying to land an internship but they traditionally don't take undergraduates which makes it nearly impossible. Now I am looking to get good experience in IB to make the transition to PE easier after i graduate or after i get my MBA.

Submitting my resume and cover letters week after week seems like i'm dropping them into a bottomless pit and competing with the business school kids is quite frankly annoying because IB obviously prefers them and I have yet to be invited for an interview.

I read Mergers & Inquisitions frequently and am considering cold calling boutiques around the country. Good idea?

How would a student in my position leverage himself into a solid internship in IB, even if it is for a smaller boutique? I just want to work in an IBD, don't care too much if it's not for a BB.

Thanks in advance everyone!
