IB to MBA then back to IB?
I was reading the thread about why people dislike MBA associates and a common theme seemed to emerge suggesting that MBA associates are better off in the long run due to the skills they gained from their MBA.
I'm a junior in undergrad, so any consideration of an MBA is a long ways off for me, but do people ever do IB for 3 to 4 years, get an MBA, then go right back into IB? I don't think I've ever seen someone like that on LinkedIn.
Would those people get to come back as whatever rank they left at, or would they have to start over again at As1?
It was very common back in the day but not anymore. You don’t need it to move up the Ib ranks these days.
Almost never - happened a generation ago, but these days banks will happily keep just about any willing analyst on for associate.
Typically IB analysts who want to do MBA will do 2 years IB -> 2 years PE -> MBA -> Back to PE, or some other job. Even then, lots of PE jobs are not requiring MBAs to move up like they used to.
Only if you're really trying to lateral up say from a no-name boutique to an EB or BB for whatever archaic reason
Know someone that did 2 yrs as an Analyst at JPM IB, 2 yrs full-time MBA in NY, and then back to JPM IB as a post-MBA Associate.
Waste of time and money.
More common for international students. Did see a few who moved from MM in the US to top BB/EB after MBA.
Have seen analyst -> MBA -> back to old firm at Asso 2 (essentially skipping Asso 0/1) . Also seen Analyst -> MBA -> back to old firm at Asso 0-2 for 2 years -> VP (essentially skipping Asso 3).
