I'm gonna sign a bunch of offers and keep reneging. Fuck everyone.

I got blindsided and didn't get an offer from BX. Really sucks because the market is ass rn and I could've signed another offer instead of BX. Others are in the same position as me. I realized no firm cares about you so I honestly feel no remorse for reneging. I'm not gonna be cordial with people that don't give a shit about me.

Please let me know why I'm wrong. Ik there are repercussions to reneging, but I feel like you have to put yourself first. Especially in this environment. Wdyt

there's a difference between looking out for yourself and trying to screw other people. from your post sounds like you're planning to reneg just for the lolz because you're pissed

Was thinking about this recently as I was watching some shows like Vikings and how their value systems are different.

Personally I think it's stupid that we have it drilled into us from young that we need to be nice and kind to everyone and treat everyone with respect. Firstly because this completely goes against human nature. And secondly this fundamentally isn't how the world works and you're just leaving yourself susceptible to getting burnt like that.

So definitely agree once you finally break out of that mindset and back into the natural human mindset you realise you don't owe the world shit at all.

Yes, I pity the co-workers who are "loyal to the firm". Yes, be loyal to a non-sentient, immortal entity that will get rid of you the second someone decides you should go. By all means, make good relationships with some people, especially the ones that can actually help you, but at the end of the day, you have to do whats best for you. That said, there can be repercussions for some actions so make sure you know what they are and can accept / mitigate them.

Understandable but if you do good things in the world, you WILL be repaid

Karma is real, don't be surprised if your child comes out disabled.

It's okay though, I also renege

Yea, karma sucks because a huge bank has to spend time trying to fill a position that 1000s of kids would literally eat shit for.

Completely true. Banks don't give a fuck about you. I mean I know banks who deliberately gave return offer decisions super late or gave laid off analysts "underperformer" references purely so other banks wouldn't be able to take someone who they put time and resources into training.

I don't know why this forum used to preach being "ethical" about not reneging. Someone recently told me for next recruiting cycle just accept every offer you get so you have time to make up your mind. I first thought that was stupid but now I 100% agree.

Advice I’ve heard from people 3-4 years older than me in their careers so take with a grain of salt.

In banking, reneging after your internship isn’t the worst thing to do. They’ll be able to fill the spot pretty easily and will probably just look the other way. Is it possible another bank catches word? Sure but not super likely.

Private Equity is another story. Not sure what it’s like at the FT Analyst role, but when you’re interacting with HHs who get compensated based on you signing, word gets around quick if you reneg. At this point, it becomes unprofessional and will burn more bridges than in banking.

Do what’s best for yourself, but do so without a chip on your shoulder. You’ll be perceived as a stronger individual with a good attitude than you will with a “fuck you” attitude.

Better you learned faster you may be aren't as good as you think and we're entitled to nada. I'd recommend self reflecting as to why it happened. It's OK to be mad now, but no excuse later... mentor told me, confidence vs cockiness especially at a young age. Something like this is what ends up shaping your career, don't be stupid. People including myself have been in way worse conditions and did just fine.

FYI the street talks to each other, one way to ticket to being blackballed
