incoming freshman at hypsm – ib 4yr plan / general advice?

hi everyone! i'm an incoming freshman at one of the hypsm schools, and i know it’s still super early to be asking this, but i also don’t want to be totally clueless when recruiting starts rolling around. so, i was wondering if anyone had general advice or a rough 4-year plan for someone looking to break into ib.

this summer, i’ve got a couple small internships lined up abroad—nothing super technical or formal, but hopefully some decent exposure. i’ve been reading through a bunch of posts here and it seems like breaking in is definitely doable if you’re proactive.

just curious what i should be keeping in mind early on—how important are freshman/sophomore internships, what actually matters vs what people overthink, and any tips for networking smart. appreciate any thoughts!

If I broke in from a state school undergrad that literally places 0 FO, and regional semi target MSF that places maybe 1-4 a year, you will be more than fine getting whatever you want, if you have more than 3 brain cells.

focus on grabbing a good first year & second year internship. focus on first-year internship for first semester and second year internship during second semester. imo best ones will by LMM/MM buyside shops. use chatgpt to find firms near your hometown & their email format then email alumni. keep yourself updated on handshake daily. keep gpa a 4.0 & take easy classes. join top clubs at your school and get to know the seniors before they head off to firms. that's an "ideal" plan for freshman year.

thank you so much, this is super helpful! two quick questions—for LMM/MM buyside shops, do you have any recommendations for what type of internships i should try to aim for? i wish i could find ones near my hometown, but my city is kinda irrelevant unfortunately. also, is it possible to land a paid remote internship freshman fall? i've seen some people pull it off, but it seems kind of rare unless you have connections or prior experience.
