Incoming FT analyst - how to improve financial modeling skills ASAP
I'll be starting FT at a BB in the summer. Honestly, I feel that I suck at financial modeling and would like to work on improving it before I start. Any advice on what would be the best way to do this in the next 1-2 months?
You'll get pretty good training, especially at a BB, but if you want to be ahead of the curve you can purchase a training program on your own. Tons of threads on here regarding that.

My bank sent me some prep booklets ahead of time. You can also ask HR if they have a leftover copy of the materials from last year that you can use.
Just a heads up to anyone hitting this old discussion: I put together a side by side comparison of the top financial modeling training courses here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/financial-modeling-training
Analyst Level Modelling? (Originally Posted: 05/17/2015)
Quick question, what soft of modelling proficiency would be expected at an Analyst 2 position? Reason for ask is, I applied for M&A Analyst 2 role at a boutique and I had to sit for a 2-hour modelling test - 3 statement from scratch, DCF, range of P/E valuation + sensitivity. I thought this was unduly rigorous for an analyst position but I may stand corrected. Move is lateral however my experience is in corp banking/LevFin so modelling experience is less equity valuation more credit/cash flow. It's been a week and I'm still anxiously waiting a response !
Not terribly uncommon. I give similar exams to potential analysts/interns expecting that they aren't going to be 100% -- more just to understand where you are currently at technically...
Thanks, that's comforting to read. I didn't manage to finish the entire valuation and initially assumed they wanted it done to 100%. This has been a source of anxiety. Fingers crossed now, cheers!
