Incoming Sophomore recruiting for IB

Hi everyone, I'm currently a student at a semi-target in Canada, aiming to recruit for IB summer internships in Toronto or NYC (I know NYC is a long shot, but still trying).

I'm planning to recruit next for the 2027 summer in January. For next summer, I was lucky enough to receive two offers, and I'd appreciate some advice on which one to take, given my end goal is IB:

I understand Big 4 M&A is more directly relevant to IB, but the Big 5 ER offer is much more competitive/prestigious in Canada.

For context, I interned this past summer in M&A at a mid-market firm, so I will either way have deal experience.

Which option do you think positions me better for Summer IB recruiting and is there a big difference between taking the two?

Appreciate any thoughts, thanks!

Big 5 ER is pretty impressive for sophomore summer - and also you can just internally network at that bank, would be fairly easy to get into the process at the bank you'd be working at (especially when you placed in such a competitive role that early).

I'd go for the big 5 ER - you'd also get to experiment with publics - good to test if you have a passion for it / later career moves.

brand name>>>direct relevance. you wont even have done the internship by the time you recruit

Thank you! Just to clarify are you suggesting an off cycle IB role, and then use that when recruiting for summer 2027? And if I was able to get a off-cycle could I just get that converted to FT?

Yeah having winter off cycle that ideally is at big 5 IB level then it'll be an improvement on your resume and will give you a shot at the better brands and opportunities vs having just big 5 ER. Right now you'd have big 5 ER on resume and recruit for the better off cycle with that. FT from off cycle is also entirely situation dependent but can happen.

Would that mean though that I would have to be working during on-cycle 2027 recruiting (as that happens January-March for NA)?
