Hey guys, so I feel a little bit stuck in relation to what exactly it is I want to do. I know that's probably a ridiculous thing to say but I'm serious. I find everything about the finance industry so fascinating and for the past 5 years, I've been aiming towards a career in the finance sector. The trouble I have is because I find everything so fascinating, I can't choose what exact path I want to go down. One day I'm comfortable going to somewhere like KPMG, PwC, Deloitte etc. to do Deals advisory then get a BB job after a couple years experience. Then the next day I'm like, I want to do sales and trading, because I love the financial markets and I've been trading stocks for the past couple of years, the idea of either being a trader or being the sales person between the client and the trader excites me just as much as the thought of being part of multi-million pound M&A's.
The other issue I have is that I'm from a non-target and have nothing for my first-year summer. I've been shooting emails out to PE firms, Boutique IB firms and Investment Management firms, I just want an insight into the different roles that I could do to help me choose but I feel because I'm uncertain on what one to choose, I can't get across how motivated and keen I am on pursuing a pathway literally as soon as I've chosen what I want to do.
I know that once it's clear to me what I want to do, I will make it. Does anyone have any similar experience or any advice for me to help me decide what I want to do? I've read so much and still struggle to decide.
Had the same problem. I bounced from Medicine to Technology, and now I'm in IB. As a banker I do a little bit of everything (sales, people skills, personality management, while flexing my left and right brain) and I love my job.
**My Advice: ** Few people find the job of their dreams right out of college. The best you can do is gather as much information as you can to make an educated decision, and pick a route. If you fail or find out that you hate your job. You're one big big step closer to finding what you'll like.
It's calming to see that someone else has had the same problem. What made you choose IB/M&A?
I think the issue that I have is that I feel if I don't choose where specifically I want to go to right now then I'm going to miss out if you get me.
The big 4 recruits graduates with an accounting degree (150cr) that plan to get licensed; unfortunately a decision you have to make in college. Going into private afterwards isn't an issue but I think that you would have difficulty beginning there if that's not your major
