Intel vs AMD Ryzen | Buying new computer

Buying a new computer for analyst IB work - going to get a Lenovo thinkpad, but I can't find any place that says the difference in quality between Intel and AMD chips. I know the intel name is supposed to be better, but is it really $500s better?

Please lemme know if AMD is trash or if I can save some money

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Lenovo ThinkPad Recommendation:

    • Lenovo ThinkPad is highly recommended for its great keyboard and performance. Users have reported that it handles multiple tabs, Excel, and PowerPoint efficiently without losing speed.
  2. Intel vs. AMD:

    • Intel Chips: Generally known for their reliability and performance, especially in professional settings. They are often preferred for tasks that require high processing power and stability.
    • AMD Chips: AMD has made significant strides in recent years, particularly with their Ryzen series. They offer competitive performance at a lower price point compared to Intel. AMD's chips are known for their multi-threading capabilities, which can be beneficial for multitasking and running complex applications.
  3. Cost Consideration:

    • The price difference between Intel and AMD can be substantial. If saving money is a priority, AMD Ryzen chips provide excellent value for the performance they offer.
    • For example, a user mentioned getting a top model Lenovo ThinkPad with a student discount for $650, which suggests that good deals are available if you look for sales and discounts.
  4. User Experience:

    • Users have reported positive experiences with both Intel and AMD chips in Lenovo ThinkPads. The choice largely depends on your specific needs and budget.

In summary, AMD is not "trash" and can be a cost-effective alternative to Intel, especially if you are looking to save money without compromising too much on performance.

Nowadays I believe Intel has stronger workstation cpus while AMD is better for gaming. It’s been a while since I was plugged into the pc-building community tho, you’ll find better answers on Reddit.

Newest generation Intel chips are having significant issues. Get the P14s with the Ryzen 5 or 7 chip.

They just redid the naming convention - so if a 2025 then go for the 9XXX.

IIRC the 79XX is the highest end laptop chip for the 2024 model year. The second digit is the generation of architecture. I have a 7840U.
