Internship starting...

Start the internship starts this week, so a few questions:

It is business casual. Anything wrong with going my first day in a suit/tie just to make an impression?

Also, wrt the I-9 forms. I only have a copy of my birth certificate, though the original will be here by the end of the week. Is this a big deal?

Nothing wrong with wearing a suit/tie per se, but no need to alienate yourself from your peers and probably the full-time analysts by standing out. I was an SA at business casual last summer, and from my experience, people like it better if you stick to that. You've already made the impression to get the job, and your overall performance will ultimately make a far greater impression than what you decide to wear on the first day.

Copies should be fine so far as new hire processing goes. I used a color copy of my passport/drivers license and social security card.

so, wear a suit without a tie on the first day?

also, the analyst mentors they assign - what should you talk about with them? can you ask your ridiculous "how do i refer to the MD" questions to them or more so culture etc based questions?

they will probably not terminate you for showing a copy of your birth certificate, so long as the real one is delivered in a week or two.

First of all, good question. Probably should be its own topic, but:

be VERY judicious when talking to your mentor. Assume everything you say will go back to HR and to the senior bankers in your group (b/c that's what will happen). Assume nothing you tell him will be in confidence. If, at the end of the summer, you tell him you're not sure you'd accept an offer, you will not get an offer. If someone in the group pisses you off and you want to vent, do that w/ someone in your summer class, not your mentor. This was not just my experience, but the experience of several people I know at a variety of banks. Good luck.
