Intl Student
So I consistently hear how much harder it is to break into IB (or any job for that matter) if youre an international student due to needing sponsorship to stay. I'm currently a freshman at a top target and this obviously concerns me. I do know one or two international seniors who will begin IB at a BB firm, but I was wondering if I could get some insight as to how much harder it is to break into it as an international? Would I need a higher gpa than typically required? Also how much more impressive should my resume be? Is it near-impossible considering breaking into ib is already near impossible anyway?
Definitely possible, but definitely more challenging. Look up lists of banks on wso that sponsor and target your networking there.
Where can I see which ones are more likely to sponsor/sponsor more intls?
I’ve been through summer internship recruiting and was able to land a MM offer, but no return extended.
It’s possible - but you cannot f up your internship or full time recruiting can really give you hell.
It’s also worth to consider what kind of international are you - say for UK/Canada passport holders, it’s much easier to stay.
Sponsorship is market dependent. I was recruiting for FT24 and needless to say, it was a shit show. Banks that just 1-2 years back didn’t have trouble sponsoring were rejecting me left, right and centre for FT roles. I had developed great personal and professional relationships at a couple of MM firms (Raymond James, William Blair, Lincoln) and all of them had a problem with the whole visa situation. Citi, which is a very famous go to shop for international kids didn’t sponsor anyone this year in a couple of their non NY offices (at analyst level).
Even a director level recommendation at A&M for the RX team didn’t help me much.
Long story short, work authorisation is very tricky to navigate. Focus on getting into a BB, I personally don’t know of a lot of EBs that sponsor.
GPA and resume won’t change a lot. I had a perfect GPA, and had a very strong resume imo.
A global mobility manager once told me, if you can get the recommendation of a practicing leader (VP & above in big 4), you’ll be considered for sponsorship irrespective of the firms policy. So try and target your networking calls in that manner if the need be.
agree with most. it will be harder as there are a lot less banks to recruit for (the number is going down each year unfortunately). But if the banks are known to sponsor kids, most of the times, your status does not work against you. so if you are a good candidate, you will end up with an offer regardless.
To OP, focus on the banks that are always friendly towards international kids (GS, Bofa, DB, EVR, MOE, JEFF, and a couple others). Try to be the best candidate you can be on paper. Also, try really hard for SA recruiting because that is when there are most open spots, and it is objectively the easiest cycle to break in. Don't bank on FT recruiting as it is always a shitshow.
Banks which previously sponsored are not sponsoring, and even if you got a full time job green card sponsorship in banks are extremely hard especially comparing to other industries
Stay in India dude, please.
