Investment Banking in Suid-Afrika?

I speak Afrikaans and know a great deal about South Africa and the surrounding area, how would I go about getting a job at an investment banking location in South Africa? I know that Citigroup and a couple other banks have offices in a handful of cities in South Africa, would I apply to Citigroup telling them I

as long as you are willing to relocate I don't think it'll be a problem, not like there are billions of business schools in south africa from which they can pick people.

Investec and Rand Merchant Bank - both these guys are big players in South Africa as well as having decent operations in London. I know various people in both banks and they are good guys. The people based in SA have excellent lifestyles and travel to London a lot.

We also have HSBC, Macquarie, Citi, UBS, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan. Most of the action goes to the local banks though. The internationals dont have the balance sheet to compete locally.

In more recent times the international banks are honing in on the advisory business and trying to establish a name in Africa. As as Ryan stated, they're still cautious of applying their balance sheet. This may change soon though

These days everyone from Rothschild, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, Societe Generale to Renaissance Capital, HBZ, ICBC, China Construction Bank, China Railroad Construction Company, State bank of india, and ING are in South Africa seeking that emerging market Alpha

Would it be easier for someone with a European degree to get an IB position in South Africa? I ask because I lived there for a long time when I was young and still have a South African passport (no visas, etc needed)?

It depends on whether you're going for analyst or associate. Generally the analyst programmes don't care where you're from. The associate jobs want emerging emerging markets experience. SA citizenship is a big plus.

dude again?

we gave u a list of interesting banks to look at after your last post. go online, check their websites for internship opportunities (both summer analyst & off-cycle) and start applying. if you cant find what you're looking for, pick up the phone and call HR at these banks and ask them to help you out. in addition, go to the careers center at witwatersrand and ask them to help you out with a list of possible employers that they have a relationship with as well as some alumni that you could contact and maybe get a meeting

if you just want a first internship in the world of (corporate) finance you may also wanna look at the United Farmers Fund in cape town. they offer internships on a regualr basis to students from SA and Europe.

Check out Barnard Jacobs Mellet, but seriously dude, you are asking about RSA when you are actually based there? I would imagine Standard Chartered has big operation there too.

Thats what i plan on doing. Looking for internships at small firms, but nearly impossible to find these small firms.

My networking has helped me quite a bit though, as i met with a MD a week ago, and he assured me a postion in a programme next year.

But ill then, i need to find another 1
