Investment Banking in Toronto

Hi guys!

I've been following WSO for quite some time, but have just signed up recently. I'm currently a first year student at UofT St. George and am aiming to break into Investment Banking later on. I came to Canada (rejecting quite a few good offers from US target schools) because my family immigrated here, and I needed to live here to obtain a nationality.

I've heard from the people on this forum that UofT isn't a target for US BB firms, but I would prefer to stay in Canada and work for a big Canadian Bank (i.e. RBC, CIBC, TD etc), do UofT grads stand a competitive chance for these banks? Also, I'm not in Rotman, but rather I'm aiming to pursue a Bsc. in Financial Economics (this is a more rigorous and competitive program than Rotman), and I may combine this with a Comp Sci Major/Minor. Is this a strong academic combination, or should I just transfer to Rotman?

Also, I think I might be able to maintain a competitive enough GPA to try and transfer to Ivey at the end of my second year, but that has its disadvantages as well i.e. I'll lose my connections I've made here, would have to start from ground up, make new connections, find clubs etc. Is UofT really that bad for Canadian firms that I don't stand any chance at all and I need to transfer, or does it still provide me a competitive chance for Canadian Banks.

Thank you.

I'm an international too and spent a lot of time doing research on Canadian schools (settled with a US school).

UofT is terrible. Coupled with grade deflation, huge class sizes and total lack of alumni on the street your chances are slim to none.

If you got into US Target schools why did you not apply to Queens, Ivey or McGill? Much better shot of placing on Bay Street or even in NY. I even know of Ivey grads working in LA/SF -> Barclays FSG LA has multiple analysts from Ivey.

Partly because I come from South East Asia, and UofT is an extremely well known school there, so I obviously assumed it was the best choice. Also according to the WSO power rankings it was 8th in the World for investment banking.

And now I know that UofT isn’t as good as let’s say Ivey/Queens, but is it really so bad as I should transfer, or if I spend the same effort(even more) trying to network here and make connections, it’ll be better?
