Is 26 Too Late to Start a Career in Investment Banking?

Hello WSO Community,

I’m currently 26 years old and considering a career change into investment banking. At the moment, I hold a position as a product manager at a bulge bracket (BB) bank, where my team oversees a suite of trading platforms. My role involves a blend of technical proficiency, project management, market analysis, and collaboration with various stakeholders. I am also scheduled to be promoted to Associate next March.

I’m curious about a few things and would greatly appreciate your insights:

1. **Is 26 too late to start a career in investment banking?**
2. **Given my background as a product manager in charge of trading platforms, how relevant are my skills for an IB role?**
3. **Would I need to start from the beginning in investment banking, or could my promotion to Associate and experience be leveraged to enter at a higher level?**
4. **What steps should I take to transition into investment banking successfully?**
5. **Are there any alternative career paths within finance that could leverage my current experience and align with my long-term goals?**

I have a strong understanding of financial markets, technical skills related to trading systems, and significant project management experience. I’m also considering additional education or certifications to bolster my candidacy.

Any advice or recommendations from those who have made a similar transition or have experience in the field would be immensely helpful.

Thank you in advance for your guidance!

Best regards

**EDIT**

Long term I would like to start my own business but I'm trying to build the necessary skills in the early stages of my career in order to achieve that. Whether or not investment banking is best I'm not sure but I want to look for roles that give me the necessary skills, also the contacts and access to the required capital in order to start a business.

Is 26 too late to start a career in investment banking? Not at all.

Given my background as a product manager in charge of trading platforms, how relevant are my skills for an IB role? Not at all sadly. Unless you are talking about Sales snd Trading.

Would I need to start from the beginning in investment banking, or could my promotion to Associate and experience be leveraged to enter at a higher level? You'd start as a graduate analyst. You don't have the experience or technical skills to be a senior analyst or associate.

What steps should I take to transition into investment banking successfully? Either you need to network and try to move internally into IB at your current bank. Or go get an MBA and then recruit for MBA associate roles

Are there any alternative career paths within finance that could leverage my current experience and align with my long-term goals? What are you long term goals? You don't state them unless I've missed something?  Realistically your role now is more suited to a move to consulting than front office finance.

My long term goal is to start my own business later on in life, probably in the tech space-  I’m looking for a role that gives me the necessary skills, also the contacts and access to the required capital in order to start a business.

By 29-30 you’d become an associate. Lot of MBA associates come in at 30-32. Some even older.

2 finance degrees (bs and ms) and Repe (3 years as an analyst). The interview process took 6 months ( 6 soul sucking months). I had 3 interviews in my life for IB so 33.3% success chance for non target is pretty good I guess. Honestly, I’m just happy to slave away for my family that I love so much
