Is buying a sports coat worth it as an analyst?

I have a couple suits, but no casual sports coat. I'm starting my analyst stint in a couple months and an wondering if I should get one. I have the money to buy a decent one, just don't know if I'll actually put it to use. My group is business casual and the only time I've seen anyone wear a sports coat (over their business causal outfit) is to meet with prospective/current clients. And even then, it's only half the time.

What do you guys think?

I don't not understand why white American middle class males think sports jackets are good attire in any situation.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

Why do you not like them? A sports jacket is a nice way to dress up an otherwise casual outfit. If you live in the South, it's also a replacement for a suit in some situations.

I have different cultural values. I grew up in a country and class where we thought sports jackets were a look for people who wanted to look like Rodney Dangerfield.

Here is what I would do (and did myself when I first started): go to a store that sells suits and get your jacket measurement. Then, take a look through eBay for a lightly used sports jacket from a top brand (Canali, Hickey Freeman, Brioni, Oxxford, Zegna, etc.). I got a slightly used Hickey Freeman jacket for $90 that Nordstrom was selling for $600. You can then take the jacket to a tailor.

I'll do this. Thanks. I'm thinking of a slim fitted unconstructed navy blazer.

MS? I tell you, I don't get no respect at all.

Sports Coats and Blazers are essential. Get more than one. It is essentially very nice business casual. I almost always wear one to work, with the exception of winter when I wear an overcoat.

Make sure you get them tailored (waist and sleeves). If this is your first one then I would just get a navy blazer. Outside of that have fun.
