Is it bad to apply for a couple internships at the same firm at the same time?

This is definitely a dumb question... but I need it answered because I genuinely can't figure it out and I don't want to make a mistake. Would it be stupid of me to apply for internships in two different arms at the same bank?

I would love to get into investment banking but I am a rising junior from a non-target with a fine GPA, and there aren't too many alums from my school at banks back home (NY metro). I have been cold call emailing with decent success, but I still feel like I haven't streamlined it enough to talk with a sufficient amount of people.

Anyway, I am not incredibly confident that I can get into IB STRAIGHT out of school. Corporate Banking though, I think is more achievable! I know several people who got into it (BB and MM) from different non-feeders, including my brother who had an absolutely shit GPA and just networked his ass off.

I believe my technical knowledge is good enough for both IB and CB, but I think CB would be a lot more achievable for me right now. I still would like to "throw my hat in" for IB, and at the moment I have been networking for both, and it feels like a time sink.

There are a handful of banks (not just BBs) still recruiting for Summer 2025 for BOTH IB and CB. I just wanted to know if it would look bad if I applied for both at the same firm. If so, I will focus the hell out of CB for now. I am sorry for the long-winded explanation, just wanted to give context. Thank you for reading!

Generally, I think they only even allow one application per cycle (at least for most banks). But overall I’d advise against it I’ve heard of situations where people have been recruiting for a generalist intern program and were given a choice between two different departments. The one who said he didn’t mind either one was rejected because he didn’t know what he wanted to do whilst the other applicant who had a concrete choice got the offer. I’d recommend only applying to one program.
