Is it better to specialize early on in finance? Or wait?

Currently a student but I’m about to start a SA stint with an EB.

For those in the industry - is it better to specialize in a sector i.e. tech early on and stick with it for your career? Or would it be better to get on a more generalist track and do the IB—>PE route before choosing a more specific path. Thanks!

Hi, I'm an incoming analyst at GS/MS in London so not too experienced and might have different experience, but will tell you my view. I think that if you already know what you want to specialize in, it's better to do it early so you have deal experience to talk about when you recruit for career opportunities in your industry of interest. If you are not set on an industry, it's fine to be a generalist for about 2 years. As long as you have 1-2 deals to talk about and you don't do very specific modelling, any fund will give you looks if you are at an EB. Clearly this is different if you want to go in REPE or funds that require very specific knowledge and are not focused on EBITDA businesses.

 

As a generalist right now... I would specialize earlier on. The senior bankers above me have no fucking clue what they're selling because they never specialized. This obviously hurts when they go into a pitch and only have a vague idea of what the fuck they're actually trying to sell.

The other cool thing about specialization is that it lets you see opportunities others might not. Makes for better exits to companies you think will go on a tear, opps to start your own business where you see a market misalignment, etc. As a generalist, I know surface level amounts about like 6-7 industries right now... if that.
