Is Math Credential Enough? CS?
I am a sophomore at a semi-target school. My goal is to break into IBD and later HF but potentially go to grad school after a few years of work. I am currently an Econ/Math major, and, after quick planning for my degree work, I realize my credit space allow me to do either of the below:
Complete an Econ/Math major with a philosophy minor(something I am genuinely interested in)
vs
Complete an Econ/Cs major with no room for any minor
I understand the importance of technical tools, including programming. But I am not sure if a CS degree is worth it if I can pick up the technical part myself. May be worth noting I am happy if I can keep my options opened but I am not passionate to go into algo trading/HFT.
For either option, I will use the rest of the space on programming classes or business-related classes.
I can keep my GPA above 3.9. And I know these details are small compared to experience and internship. But I still hope to hear some opinions. Would the math background be enough? What are the pros and cons of this decision regarding working, business school, and skills preparation?
Thank you for reading this question and I appreciate any opinions.
Unless you’ve got a real passion for algo stuff, I’d think econ-math would position you very, very well. And philosophy isn’t a bad subject to do on the side - shows you can write and have some critical thinking skills, which are often lacking in STEM folks (saying this as someone who did STEM UG and Master’s).
