Is there an inherent stigma against freshman internships?
I have an "offer" to intern for 10 weeks at a small impact fund/advisory firm near my home. Amidst the relatively menial tasks that can safely be entrusted to a kid with no experience, there would be a couple of finance-relevant things like company/fund evaluation and preparation of investment briefs on behalf of clients looking to invest.I'm thinking about going into it with the mindset of being prepared to work my ass off, so what I'm wondering is how well I'd be able to leverage it looking at summer IB soph/junior year. Is there any point from a resume perspective in doing this? I'm concerned that freshman internships are generally just associated with nepotism (which is definitely true here - I got the interview on the basis of "connections"), but does my role scope put me in a position where I can achieve something tangible that would "mean" something on a resume? Or am I better off just getting the job done and spending more time enjoying my summer…
First internship hardest to get, so if you're doing you first internship as a freshman, do it by all means. This helps you to get better 2nd internship and eventually helps you to land the coveted SA position in your junior year.
Came here to say this. I really struggled to get my first internship, but it made the following ones 10x easier to obtain.
I don't think people will assume you got it through nepotism (I certainly didn't), but will think you worked hard to find any experience.
Focus on learning and doing a good job on each task you get assigned. As it is your first internship, remember to prioritize quality over quantity. No one will judge you for how long it takes you to do anything, but they will judge you if the work looks sloppy, unedited, and was done with haste.
this is a really dumb post man, you're asking if it will look better to have a freshman summer finance internship or better to just go enjoy your summer so it looks like you aren't getting benefits from nepotism. Makes zero sense. Take the internship and grind harder. u sound soft
They’re not looked down upon per se, but they’re pretty unnecessary. Most people are either 1) glad or 2) wish they’d done study abroad, etc., instead of a spending a summer in a suit staring at PowerPoint a year earlier than they had to. It’s almost altruistic — “don’t waste your last summer of being a kid, kid”
You could easily do a freshman summer internship and try and knock out one or two summer online classes, and this can free up a semester in school to study abroad.
Sure, but you can also be a lifeguard that summer, study abroad during the school year anyway, and be totally fine for junior year recruiting. Banking isn’t hard (nor is PE). That incremental 5-10 work experience as a freshman isn’t going to move the needle, but a cool, final ‘regular’ job might.
Did this freshman summer. Helped me a lot, though it was the first covid summer, so it wasn't like I could do fun stuff anyway.
I had a MD ask me if I had "inherited" a sophomore IB internship I had gotten through cold emailing boutiques. Probably a rare situation, I would go for the internship, it is a net gain
"inherited" as in thru connections?
