Jefferies tech culture?

CS major here, not super interested in going into finance long term but I accepted a summer internship at Jefferies for their tech internship. I’ve been reading about them past few days and almost every post here claims the culture is extremely toxic, sweatshop like esp for juniors. Just wondering if that’s only true for the “traditional” finance roles or across the entire firm, as again I’m a tech/SWE intern.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the toxic and "sweaty" culture at Jefferies is primarily associated with their traditional finance roles, particularly in investment banking. Analysts and associates in these roles often report long hours, high-pressure environments, and a "work-hard, play-hard" culture that can feel overwhelming. However, this doesn't necessarily translate to the tech or software engineering (SWE) side of the firm.

For tech internships, the culture may differ significantly. While Jefferies is known for its demanding environment in finance, tech teams often operate with a different structure and work dynamic. That said, it's worth noting that Jefferies' rapid growth and staffing challenges have been mentioned across various departments, which could potentially impact workload and expectations even in tech roles.

As a CS major, your experience will likely depend on the specific team you're placed in and the nature of the projects you'll be working on. It might be a good idea to connect with current or former tech interns at Jefferies to get a clearer picture of what to expect. If you're not aiming for a long-term career in finance, this internship could still be a valuable learning experience and a strong addition to your resume. Just be prepared for the possibility of a fast-paced environment.

Fellow CS major here. As somebody who IS going down the investment banking path, when people refer to Jefferies being “toxic” or a “sweatshop”, they are most likely referring to the IBD (investment banking division) so you shouldn’t have to worry.
