Jewish IB Analysts: Keeping Sabbath?
Hi all,
Niche question but: heading towards a summer internship, hoping to go FT, at a BB in London (although NY perspectives welcome).
Am beginning to question the possibility of this career path given my observance of the Sabbath/Shabbat. I'm aware being unavailable 1/7th of the week isn't ideal in this line of work.
Do any Jewish analysts here have experience in keeping Sabbath? Is it possible? Any seniors with Jewish analysts around here?
Thanks!
If you work at GS it's fine if not you're screwed
Haha. This is a genuine concern though - any actual insights or is this genuinely somewhat true given the high proportion of Jews there?
Honestly the only role of an intern and analyst is to support the rest of the team whenever asked to. You are a tool/resource for your team and you have to be trusted. How can I trust someone that I cannot reach 1 day a week if there is a business need? You either have to reconsider your career choices or your religious activities. Friend of mine was in the office on Christmas day so that just tells you the level of fucks given.
The best associate in my group was Jewish and was off every Saturday until evening. Everyone in the group knew this and respected it. From his end, he compensated for this by working harder than everyone else during the other days of the week and was usually one of the guys there the latest on a daily basis. He was staffed on the most complex / largest deals, he wasn't there putting in face time but genuinely because he needed to be. The above example was an analyst promote, spent 3 years in the group.
Gotta love the prospective interns, interns and 1st year analysts posting comments on this topic "you have to do what is requested of you" and "how can i trust someone that I cannot reach 1 day a week if there is a business need." Any banker worth his salt can figure out how to work around someone's personal / religious committments. Sure, there are particularly bad groups within banks and bad banks culture wise where they might be unreasonable with something like this, but by and large people are understanding. Every other banker is Jewish as well, so this one they would be particularly understanding on. As I mentioned above, just be clear in communication and it shouldn't be an issue.
