After 2 years you can either 1) get an early promotion to associate 2) get offered a 3rd year as an analyst or 3) asked to leave

in 2020/2021, almost everyone was given the early promotion

in 2023, the vast majority were offered a 3rd year and only those that were exceptional were offered an early promote and only those who were awful were asked to leave.

Would expect that to be more of the norm going forward. Many who were given the early promotion in 2021/2022 were not prepared to be associates and were not successful.

If the program's going for 3 years, how easy would it be for you to switch groups if you're already in an IB team?

JPM is actually one of the worse among the BBs for switching teams, much easier to just lateral to another BB/EB, especially since I assume the market can only improve within these next 2 years given how terrible it is now.

3 year program, but the vast majority leave IB after 2 years so it's not really a huge consideration for most. I think it's best to start a career at BB's with 2-year programs since you can always move around, especially between the bulge brackets after the analyst level. It's fairly hard to lateral as an analyst but afterward, it's honestly not super hard + there's almost always an opportunity to leave with your seniors who often move firms. Tons of people move from lower-tier BBs to top-tier ones and from what I have heard it's fairly easy past analyst level, and tbf there's also a lot of movement from top-tier BBs to lower-tier ones.
