keeping up with m&a transactions?
Are there any good websites or tools that basically compiles a list of all m&a transactions, sorts them by date/sector/size, etc.?

Bloomberg. Also check dealbook.com
No there is no such site but that would be great. If I knew anything about web design, I would consider starting one.
If you just wanna keep up to date with M&A transactions, subscribe to NYTimes Dealbook by email and read the M&A section daily.
you might already know this (in which case, this is for those of you who don't), but whack "mergers acquisitions" into google news each day.
find Reuters' "Deals of the Day"
it's not what OP was looking for, but it's not bad
or, you could just bookmark a newspaper story about a deal when you see it
I told someone this yesterday when they asked for the same thing concerning Asian deals, I know there are firms out there that at least put together comprehensive lists and analysis of all M&A transactions in a certain region, for example Baird and Grisons Peak each do a list of all Chinese M&A activity for the quarter (not sure if Baird does this every quarter, I know Grisons Peak does and includes all non equity activity as well).
I would assume there are other firms out there focused on other regions of the world who put out similar reports based on their region of expertise, I only know about China. If I were you I would dance around google with this in mind.
Also Deloitte puts out their M&A digest for each region of the world either daily or weekly, but it's more intelligence than a comprehensive list of all deals. At least it's something to work with.
Correction: I just realized the Baird and Grisons Peak reports were focused on outbound investment activity only. But again, just goes to show there are firms out there trying to capture a certain niche in M&A research. And if you put them all together you can probably get a pretty comprehensive list.
You can use Capital IQ, but I doubt you'd be able to afford it.
Pretty much every finance professional I know subscribes to PEhub (http://www.pehub.com/). You'll get a daily email listing a bunch of transactions as well as some commentary on random things that influence the industry. It takes about 1 minute to skim through the summary and you read the full articles if anything catches your eye.
Mergermarket - but obviously it's not available to individual subscribers
