I'm in my last few weeks of life as a banker and moving on to the buyside. I have absolutely no motivation to do any work at all right now in my current group as I am already looking forward to my new job. I haven't submitted my resignation to my bank though.
Let's say you really dislike the group that you are in (as is the case for me) and not looking to go back into banking in the future, is it ok to just not do any work, take ages to respond to emails and just basically being a free rider for the remainder of my time in the bank? I know doing this will burn some bridges but it's hard psychologically to motivate myself.
What do you think?
Honestly, you NEVER want to carelessly burn any bridges in this industry. You never know how someone you know now might be able to help/screw you in the future. It may be difficult to motivate yourself to continue doing the work, but finish strong.
Are you moving from a BB to PE? If so, are you moving to a megafund?
Some banks require you to give a 2-week notice ahead of your planned leave. If this is so, just do it and your team will release you from any business sensitive duty, or even get you out of the office immediately while having you stay on the payroll for 2 additional weeks. Kinda of a short vacation.
Ya, I would give them your two weeks now and most likely they will get rid of you right away. Things always have a way of coming back to haunt you so I would avoid burning bridges.

These people will need to give you recommendations in the future. Even if you don't list them as a reference, your future employers will see your bank/group's name and call up their buddies in that group to see how well you did. The last thing you want to do is throw your rep away over 3 weeks after the year+ of torture you endured.
My employment contract doesn't require any notice period - only VPs and above have to give a notice period at my bank. That is why I am not tendering my resignation straightaway. Also, in response to one of the posters above, I am moving to a hedge fund.
Thanks for the sound advice of finishing strong...i guess i know this too already so it's just about motivating myself to do work. It doesn't help that I absolutely loathe and despise my current group and the people on one of the deals that I am working on now.
nah better dont do that.. you'll never know how ur boss/colleagues can screw up your new role..

If you've got immediate notice, just cut it off now. Go spend 2 weeks in the Maldives before starting your new job.
Start looking at gay porn/interest sites and being openly homo...but still work hard. Try to get fired by a homophobic boss and sue for millions. Then start the new job.

Relax guy, just curious about your experience. Was your group worked harder than most of the other groups or something?

i understand im out of the loop currently, but isn't it standard practice to give 2 weeks notice regardless of contract stipulations, as aforementioned?
