Lateraling?
College senior and incoming IB analyst.
Extremely grateful for my opportunity (given current market conditions) and really enjoy the group, but pay and exit oops are not ideal.
I’m looking to lateral after 1 year, and I was wondering if there is anything I should be doing now to prepare for that.
TDLR: Should I reach out to groups that I’m interested in and ask to connect (w/o revealing my intent to lateral, initially) to build relationships that I can tap into when I am ready to lateral?
Bump. In a similar situation
I dont think it could hurt once you start working FT. Maybe ~3 months in start to tap your network of folks that work at firms you are interested in, or even shoot out cold emails. I wouldnt do it beforehand. You could phrase it as wanting to learn more about the bank, looking to grow your network, or just that you're exploring what else is out there. If others are having slow weeks Im sure some would jump on calls with you.
Thanks for the input. My only thing is: wouldn't bankers be more willing to help students than people who are already in the industry?
Probably, but how else do you grow a network from scratch?
Right, which is why I am asking: should I just reach out now to “learn about the bank/group,” “expand my network” etc., given that they’d be more willing to help me more, as a student?
