LBS vs HSG
Hi, I have a big dilemma about LBS MFA vs HSG MBF. I'm in a bit of a unique situation. To give context, I'm an international, studied at a target UK uni for undergrad, top BB S&T, then worked for 2 years at a top hedge fund (Citadel/Baly/P72/Millenium/DE Shaw) in fundamental L/S and now looking to transition into IB instead. No prior IB experience, but LOTS of experience in fundamental financial modelling. I mean I am technically in a seat that lots of IB people would love to exit into. I just started the other way around.. I would like to stay in London long-term and don't care about Zurich/DACH and Asia.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of your dilemma between LBS MFA and HSG MBF:
LBS MFA
Pros: 1. London Location & Networking: Being in London provides proximity to the financial hub, which can be advantageous for networking and attending events. Your Warwick friends' experiences suggest that studying at a London-based school like LBS can significantly boost interview opportunities (7-10 interviews minimum). 2. Brand Recognition: LBS has a strong global reputation, particularly in the UK, which could help with elite boutique (EB) and middle-market (MM) recruiting. 3. Target for London IB: LBS is a recognized feeder for London IB roles, and your hedge fund experience combined with the LBS brand could make you stand out.
Cons: 1. Cost: At £52k/year (plus an additional £12k for an extra semester), the financial burden is significant, especially with a 13% loan interest rate. Even with a £20k scholarship, it will stretch your £50k savings thin. 2. Uncertainty in Outcomes: Despite the brand, some graduates from top London schools (LBS, LSE, Imperial) struggle to secure internships, which adds risk given your lack of prior IB experience. 3. Shorter Program: The one-year structure limits the number of recruiting cycles, which could be a disadvantage compared to HSG.
HSG MBF
Pros: 1. Cost-Effective: At £7k/year, HSG is significantly cheaper, reducing financial stress and allowing you to focus on your career transition. 2. Multiple Recruiting Cycles: The longer program duration (extendable to 2-3 years) provides more opportunities to recruit for IB internships and full-time roles. 3. Technical Rigor: HSG's academic focus is renowned for producing technically strong candidates, which could further enhance your already solid financial modeling skills. 4. European Integration: Learning German and being in Switzerland could open doors to broader European opportunities, even if London remains your primary goal.
Cons: 1. Location: Being outside London might limit immediate networking opportunities and access to London-based IB roles. However, this could be mitigated by self-initiative and leveraging alumni networks. 2. Perception in London: While HSG has a strong reputation, it may not carry the same weight as LBS in the UK. Additionally, fewer HSG graduates in London could reflect self-selection rather than a lack of opportunities.
Key Considerations for Your Unique Profile
Recommendation
If your primary goal is to secure a London IB role and you are confident in your ability to network aggressively, LBS could provide a slight edge. However, the financial risk is substantial, and the one-year program limits your recruiting cycles.
On the other hand, HSG offers a more financially sustainable option with multiple recruiting cycles, allowing you to build your profile further and reduce the pressure of immediate success. While it may require more effort to break into London IB from HSG, your strong profile and technical skills could bridge the gap.
Given your concerns about financial strain and the flexibility of HSG's program, HSG MBF seems like the more prudent choice. However, if you can secure significant funding or scholarships for LBS, it could be worth the investment for its London advantage.

Why IB?
You should probably consider an MBA - with your profile and a little more work exp, you should get into HSW and then can start as an associate
Pointless wasting time as an analyst imo
