If WFH no problem at all, if in the office massive bust. You are paid well in part to compensate you to live near the office and be accessible. You could make it work but its not worth it my opinion, once you start the job you will realize time becomes the most valuable thing and an hour and a half round trip commute is likely not sustainable.
If you mean living with family, depends on their attitude towards you. I tried living with family when I just left the military and will never do that again. After work you’re going to want time to yourself and privacy. Family unintentionally has a habit on intruding on your peace.
I'd totally live at home if I were you, even if WFH ends. You'd save a ton of money, and you can expense Ubers back at night.
this is what I was thinking.. 40 mins downtown in the morning and then expense uber back home at night. On the weekends, I can expense the uber to and from right?
2 hours of travel a day? Mixed with 16 hour days? You’re being paid a lot of money, live close to your office. What about getting laid? Making friends?
I’ll give it a year max!
Good idea for WFH, but in person 40 min is an extremely long commute. When you're getting crushed and only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night, cutting that down to 1-3 hours by commuting is just an awful idea, and you won't want to head back down on weekends so won't have much of a social life.
When I was a first year I lived 20 minutes from the office and it was too long of a commute. Do training/any other WFH in Harlem and then move down once you hit the desk in person. It's worth the money to get that much sleep back.
That's way too far of a commute for an analyst. Stay put though until WFH is 100% confirmed over and back to in-person then move, don't bother looking for a spot now.
I think it’s possible to live at home and be an investment banker
Live at home through WFH and then test out the commute...you will hate it. An extra 40 minutes each way on top of IB hours??
Don't you want to try to be independent and you know have control over your own life?
rather save ~24k in rent
Idk man all of the work with none of the fun seems like you'll burn out faster (and invariably get a worse bonus) than your coworkers and have a miserable existence considering the hours you're already putting in.
I get that 24k is a lot of money but also recognize that you only live once (I know it sounds cliche) and also that the job you're about to take is a marathon. That rent savings means nothing if you have to end up quitting 2-3 months in due to the reasons mentioned above.
40 minutes is a too far to commute. I promise that you will regret it and I am speaking from experience.
Unless your firm has a 2-day WFH policy, it isn't sustainable beyond 3 months.
Commute will be brutal, but depends on how much you want to save a few extra $$
how do you expect to get any putang if you're still living at home
lol
Lived in Washington Heights for my 2 yrs as an analyst at GS and made the 40-50 min commute every day. If u have the luxury of living at home and saving rent, do it. train ride downtown and uber home.
A lot of comments from above are obviously people who let work define their entire existence and would probably live in the office if they had the option lol..
it really depends on your family situation. i lived at home the first few years of working, and it was fine...my family understood i needed a degree of privacy and independence, and they were very supportive....they just wanted to help set me up to succeed...saving money on rent really helped with that.
If your family is like mine...no curfew or obtrusive behavior, then its totally fine. My family knew that when it was time for me to share with them, i would...they had their own thing going on, and so it worked out great...no stress...save money...all good. You won't be bringing girls home from the bar...but you can always go back to their place or be a baller and get the one-off hotel room if need be with last minute deals on priceline.
What about 20-25 each way(~50 min commute)? I took an offer but am stuck in a lease for a while.
Is this sustainable?
Wow!
