I start working in the Mayfair area in London and was wondering where to live. As the area is super expensive, I guess I can't afford to live somewhere in walking distance for a reasonable price. However, proximity to work is my main point when looking for a flat (walking would be perfect, but a short tube ride is fine as well). I'd also like to have good transportation links to the rest of London (f.e. when I want to go out East) and it would be nice to have some amenities like restaurants and pubs around, although this is definitely not my top priority. The area should be reasonably safe as well. I'd prefer not to spend more than GBP1000 per month as I want to pay down my debt as fast as possible.
Moreover, I'm totally fine with flatshares.
Is it possible to find something for less than GBP1000 with good links/proximity to Mayfair or is this totally unrealistic?
Where to live in London On A Budget
For less than GBP1000 a person would most likely need to have roommates to make it work. However, there are a few good options once you decide on that. Anywhere along a tube line will open the city up for you. London has pretty good public transportation.

I work in Mayfair myself, my commute is a 20-25 minute walk and I live opposite Big Ben for PS1063 per month. An amazing block with gym included etc. The area behind where I live is a complete dump (Lambeth estate) but being on the river and the area otherwise is pretty good. For nights out the Vauxhall area is good but could certainly benefit from better connections with East for when the opportunity to go out arises.Easily could find somewhere within your budget in Pimlico. Also if you are prepared to take a bus, you could also find some nice places within your budget around Baker Street or as previously mentioned Marylebone.
If you have a look on Zoopla, the freehand area selection tool is quite good to see what you could find within your budget within a certain radius.

I haven't lived in London for a while and can't tell you about the cost, but have you looked at Marylebone? You can walk right across Oxford to Mayfair (or if you live further north in Marylebone there's a bus that runs down), it has a good High St, decent pubs and food and I had more than a few friends who were in flatshares there. You're also close to a ton of tube lines so it's easy to get to any part of the city.
For less than 1,000 a month you probably have to look into sharing an appartment with other people, otherwise it's going to be extremely difficult to meet your requirements for that price.

1000 on your own? Go south of the river. Or go to the city bubut it is dead on weekends

If you share with 2 other should have no problem to go to 1000 and even lower in pimlico

Also check along relevant tube lines. I.e. You could live around Queensway station and still hVe a decent commute.
Many nice areas in London. Angel is my personal favorite. I'm surprised some posters are not sharing, hadn't even occurred to me as an option to go live on my own. Past experience has shown, more rooms = lower price per room.
Anything on Victoria/Picadilly or Jubillee lines will work well for you. You could get a reasonable place for your budget below Victoria street in Westminster and be able to walk to work across two parks in c20mins

I used to live in West Hampstead with a flatmate. Used to pay £850 each per month for a 2 bedroom flat at 5 minutes from the tube station.
Have you looked at Kilburn? It's 5 stops from Bond Street on the Jubilee line and not as expensive (although not as nice) as neighborhoods like West Hampstead and St John's Wood.

thoughts on a studio / 1BR for ~£1400 a month in the Mayfair / Marylebone area? Coming from abroad so don't rly want a roommate if possible. I don't start until later this year, so with COVID prices, wondering - is that's realistic?
