Lying about deal experience??
In my previous internship I got mostly stuck with research and BS work with no real deal related experience. However the team was very active and worked on multiple transactions while I was there.
The firm isn't IB but transaction-focused; I am currently trying to recruit for IB and deal experience would look great on my resume. Regarding this transaction - all I did was read the investment memo (no analytical/modeling/technical work), and I'm trying to spin it into sounding like I helped analysts during the due diligence process.
I know the due diligence process that analysts did (talked to them about it), all the important points regarding the deal and what my impact would've been so I can and will talk about it intelligently if asked in interviews.
But I'm worried I'll get fucked if they background check me and ask my managers if I really did it. What do you think I should do?
Don't lie about it. You can mention it that you read over or followed the process of the transaction or even state it as a "case study" if really needed.
Thanks for the response, the case study is actually a great idea - the analyst did make me do a mock investment memo for a transaction, granted it was a different one, but at least I actually did it. I think I'm gonna go with this!
A kid in my group FT lied about a deal on his resume and basically did what you are suggesting. He got arguably the best job in PE out of everybody and he did absolutely nothing for two years. It didn't take long for the PE firm to realize he was completely incompetent and not even capable of simple modeling, but I guess that's the downside. Didn't last six months....
Brother it’s not worth it. Don’t do it.
