Manhattan at night

I am staying at T-tower in Manhattan with friends for the break. I am however kind of sketched, because one of the hotel people recommended that I don't listen to my i-pod when I'm walking down the avenue at night (for safety reasons). 5th avenue seems fairly safe to me though (I mostly run into drunk corporate guys screaming shit out at 3 am). So how safe is Manhattan at night? I am not a new yorker, so I don't know it well. Do criminals and stuff from poor areas in NYC make their way into well-off areas sometimes?

No, you're fine. They were probably trying to impress what they assumed to be your green country ass so you'd tip them for their helpfulness.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Manhattan is relatively safe at night. I've been going to school in the east village for almost four years and I've never heard of type of violence in the more well known areas. Contrary to popular belief, even parts of harlem and brooklyn are pretty nice and safe as well. There will always be some 'sketchy' people (ie crazy bums and those eccentric types) but overall, it is safe. Just don't hang out in dark empty places, like central park, alone at night.

I don't understand your last question. What do you mean by well-off areas? Are you talking about the upper east side? Manhattan has all type of people everywhere within it's municipality. If you ride the subway, you'll know what I'm talking about. People from all rungs of the social ladder will conglomerate in Manhattan at any given time. I'm not sure about criminals and I'm not sure by what you mean when you say 'stuff from poor areas', but I'll say yes, but not as concentrated.

Is completely fine.

There was a rash of people getting iPods stolen awhile ago as people would see the white ear buds, run by and try to rip it out of your hands/pocket. I guess this is what the person at the hotel was talking about? Its really not unsafe at all in my experience.
