Mark-up conventions

Hello,

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of mark-up conventions?

This is not an HTML question, I mean red-pen-on-my-shitty-work-markup.

As in, a squiggle at the end of a cross through indicates delete? I have heard anecdotally that the standard markup paradigm has its roots in legal convention, but I can't for the life of me find a summary of this information.

Thanks.
