meeting BB VP for a beer...

So I'm meeting a VP from a BB next week for a beer. I'm graduating in June and currently jobless, but have been calling alumni like mad. I talked to one alumnus (who works at a small boutique) for about 40 minutes the other day and he offered to put me in touch with the guy I'm meeting this week. The guy I'm meeting knows that I'm looking for work in finance, so it's not like he expects me to interview him for the school paper or something.

So has anyone done this before? I assume the rule of the game is to just be cool? Also would it be presumptuous to bring a resume (perhaps tucked in a small notebook)?

Bring your resume with you for sure.

You should bring your resume just in case, but odds are he'll ask you to email your resume so that he can forward to the appropriate HR/Recruiting contacts.

Also, it might be too late for a full-time hire since most BBs finished recruiting in the Fall, so don't be taken by surprise if this VP tells you it's too late for his firm, but that he can put you in touch with some other contacts that might be hiring.

I'd view this as more of general career networking conversation and less of BB-specific opportunity.

Just my opinion though. Others may disagree.

Just talk to the guy. Talk about sports - college - finance, whatever. He knows what you want. If he likes you, he'll see what he can do to help you out. His shop may not even be hiring. Just go, be normal, and hope for the best.

RKBankerI agree, just about all the BBs are done with FT recruiting. However, if you got the connection and he's willing to meet with you. Odds are they'll be willing to hire you if you got what they're looking for.

If BB's are done with FT recruiting does that rigidly mean that they cannot make room for any more FT spots (as in, do they only have a specified number of available spots or is that fluid)? Just wondering, because I also have made contacts in the last couple weeks with some family connections who have client relationships with several BB firms. Do you still think it's too late to get an interview for FT?

EpictetusYeah it probably is. But those connections we're digging up are still valuable because bankers at BBs have banker friends at boutiques, and boutiques don't have super-structured FT recruiting.

Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

Probably right, hopefully we get lucky or something.

If there is headcount after the fall recruiting and a team feels like they could use an extra body (banks don't always fill up headcount using first years at fall recruiting..), and if said team feels you're good enough then you will be hired out of season.

There are exceptions. I wouldn't say its impossible, but it's really tough. Since its already January, its gonna be really tough but its possible if someone dropped out. They usually know the amount of deal flow that will be happening over the next fiscal year.
