Mentor Advice Needed

Hi everyone,

I was just curious to know if anyone here has had to ask someone to be their mentor. Have you ever needed one to get some advice on how to break into a career in finance (IB, AM) or anything else? If so, how did you go about asking someone to be your mentor? I am currently working with some (Quant) PMs and I have the ability to ask them, but not sure how to go about it. We work in the same building, and our jobs intertwine so there is a bit of communication, but how do I develop that into a professional relationship where I can potentially ask for some career guidance or potential future job opportunities without coming off too needy? I know IB is different, in relation to what I am saying above, but from the number of times I've applied, my chances are slim to get into IB without MBA. Working with PMs and developing that aspect of knowledge could lead to top MBA program with their recommendation and then I could try to break into IB - that's my current thinking. Am I thinking incorrectly here? Is this a wrong way to go about it?

Thanks,
