mistake in my email response?

I emailed an alumus of my school and he was surprisingly receptive. He told me that he forwarded my resume at this firm and will try to help out. He knows that I'm looking for new opportunities.

In my response back to him, at the end of the email, I asked him if he knew any other alumni of our school that I could reach out to. I also felt bad like I was only using him without giving anything in return, so I asked him if I could help him on anything as well and told him that I'd be glad to try to help. I'm an experienced candidate and not a fresh grad so I felt I could offer something. I haven't gotten a reply to my email since and I'm wondering if I said something I shouldn't have. What do you guys think?

I think it's kind of weird that you offered to help him out with something, but maybe that's just me.

In the past, I always felt like I was asking for something without offering anything back so I never had success. People don't want to feel used so I wanted to show that I am willing to help as well. Not sure how he took it.

Yea I don't think this is a problem. Especially if you go to a particular school with a strong alumni then generally they will help you out without asking for any favors in return. They usually just want to see there alma mater succeed. I do think though in the future you should ask for the alum information on the phone. I usually have a pencil and paper ready and just write down their names down. After that it's easy to track the contact info. Heck, if I can't find them online I'll usually just send the guy an email and ask him if he has his contact info.

Just be cautious. If you are trying to get hired by said alum then don't ask for alumni connections. Maybe just browse linkedin friends for contacts.
