A contact of mine at ML HK has told me that he can forward my resume for 2009 summer analyst positions?
Do the HK offices typically begin sa recruting this early on? If not, when is the normal period?

its a little too early. I don't think they're gonna give you an offer until the official deadline, unless the contact of yours is the MD or something.

a close friend started the internship search at her "top-listed" firm late. she had met the right people and had contacts at the firm/office (in asia) but was told that they had already hired for the summer. however, before the following school year began, she was told that they would circulate her resume and that she would be at the top of the list for the following summer.
if you have a contact willing to vouch for you, i think you have a big advantage for the upcoming year. if i were hiring someone, i would be more inclined to hiring someone recommended by an associate, then someone coming through the regular recruiting pipeline.
