Morgan Stanley hirevue interview went awful (summer analyst IBD)

Disclaimer: Edit - taking disclaimer off as it has too much information about myself.

Tbh not sure what the point of this post is and it's done now so nothing can be changed but just wanted to ask whether anyone received a hirevue interview after completing the online assessment and found it a lot harder than the hirevue interview examples found online? Mine was purely technical with no behavioural questions. I had assumed that it would be the other way with 1 or 2 technical questions (not complaining as I did have a lot of fun (and nerves) going through the interview) but it seemed a lot more difficult.

I was very unprepared tbh so it may be that the technical questions were easy but I just didn't know the answers to begin with.

I was also wondering how long it takes to hear whether you've been successful. I imagine if I didn't get in, they'll ghost me but if I do, when would I hear back?

Also because I had notes in front of me my eyes were going between my notes and the camera and pretty much all over (some of them I was looking directly at the camera for a while) but seeing my face, working out what to say, and concentrating on what I'm saying turned out to be a tough feat hahaha! Just wondering if that will really go against me or if that's ok?

Before anyone says anything and hopefully no one thinks I am ungrateful, I am really happy that I had this opportunity and wish I was a lot more prepared. It has been a huge wake up call though and I am now preparing for any future interviews/opportunities I may have. Definitely happy that this happened now rather than later!

I'm not sure I'm allowed to say this? I also think I gave too much information about myself for me to say the questions and be easily identifiable

You say you’ve wanted to go into IB for a long time yet… you didn’t event bother reading intro he industry and starting technicals? Use this as a wake up call to get your shit together and grind to be good enough for the next opportunity. This industry expects and to an extent rewards hard work. I bombed an interview at an EB at your age, but it was a lesson and you get over it. I bounced back and you will too but if you’re serious about recruiting your preparation and networking need to follow.

"at your age" lol, you're an intern, how much older can you actually be

I actually used to know a lot more when I was 16/17 than I do now which I know sucks. I was in and out of hospital throughout studies and took time to focus on my health over the past few years so my knowledge on the industry decreased.

I’m not upset as I initially never expected to get this far so it was also a confidence boost as well as a wake up call.

I’m from the UK. Networking here is not important. Many non target uni people get into Investment Banking too. I’m just focussing on the technicals now and also commercial awareness which I lack. I sound lazy af but had other things to focus on before I could focus my time on IB

I would mentally write this off as a ding and take it as motivation to prep more for next time. Never have notes in front of you for any sort of video interview, the temptation is too much and in a 1 on 1 technical interview reading off notes is an automatic ding. If it helps, turn the brightness down on your computer and just look at the camera and not your video.

Keep grinding and prep for a lot more than just the internet Hirevue questions, will help you once you advance past those.

Yeah that makes sense! I assumed everyone had notes in front of them. When I tried to not look at it I looked at the camera/above the screen or myself. Either way, it was all a bit distracting. When I concentrate, usually my eyes widen and I stare deep into something so to avoid this I was kind of looking all over. Good tip on turning brightness down!

I’m prepping from the very beginning. The basics and all the way to the top.

I’ve assumed the worst but hoping for the best. Good practise for future interviews as I know what to expect. There’s a lot of information to get through as a 2nd year uni student which I’m surprised about as I don’t know how people can remember all this. I also applied in a region where the subject you do dictates your future job so someone doing Physics would most likely go into/have to go into a Physics related job, etc. So I imagine for Investment Banking, they were more expecting someone who did a finance related course? Although it all seems centralised so I’m not sure how true what I said is haha.

I feel like I couldn’t really come across as genuine or like someone with a personality in the first question. It just asked me for a recent transaction that I found interesting from the region I’m applying to lol. I think the questions I got made it difficult cos I was asked purely technicals lol. I tried my best. Smiled, laughed, etc, (they were genuine), but I just feel like you can’t do much when it’s technicals

Fudged my hireview last year, like fucked up my second attempt completely and I still supered with their sf hc team, I would not worry about messing up the hireview

Ah that’s good to hear. I feel like fudging up one is completely fine as long as your others are good. I feel like every answer I gave was either average or below average leaning towards below average. I’m sure your answers were great hence why you got to the next round hahaha. My eyes were everywhere, I was reading my notes, etc. Awful!

take it as a good lesson lol, I passed hirevue and got second round ti at MS this summer cycle - came into it extremely nervous and revised scripts of potential questions and came across like a robot and asked some trash questions at the end. FYI, the interviewer was an associate and they were incredibly friendly and nice (gutted I messed up the interview). When thinking back to my hirevue, I was incredibly relaxed and very genuine. Every AC and interview I went into after this, I was very relaxed and scored offers for all firms I interviewed with. So although I lost MS, I came out with a very valuable lesson learnt and hopefully next recruitment cycle I'll be able to perform better.
