Moving from BB US office to BB Japan office

Is anyone familiar with this transition? How difficult is it to transfer from the US to abroad, particularly Japan? This is reference to any division.

Also, would one need to speak Japanese to be in their offices?

Senior bankers (MD/ED/VP) tend to be American or UK ex-pats who are experts in their industry coverage, but do not speak the language. Analysts and Associates will usually be native language speakers. The senior bankers have the strong technical and modeling background and rely on the younger bankers for language translations (ie credit agreements, financial statements, market news, public policy, etc...).

This transition from the US to Asia is strongly dependent on 1) how willing your bank is to cooperate with the move and 2) how aggressive you are in pursuing openings overseas.

most banks have some sort of setup where you can do 1-2 years in the US office and then pending your personal performance and availability of positions they will let you move. imagine this won't be a big issue if you do well in your group

I've heard of plenty of people work in HK without speaking any English but Japan is a different story and I imagine you will be required to be fluent in japanese as the post above me says
