My first cold email
Yesterday I sent my first cold email. I sent 3 emails, one to a VP, one to an analyst and another to a MD. So far I haven't received a response (I know that it will take few days). I want to know if this email template is ready or not.
Hello, My name is Kennedy and I’m a freshmen majoring in Business at Berkeley City College. I found your contact information through a connection on Linkedin. I am interested in investment banking would appreciate it if you could be open for a brief conversation over the phone or in person next week to talk about your role at XXXX bank, so that I can have a glimpse of the industry. Thank you for your time and help.
I would be more specific with the connection you mention, otherwise they have no real reason to get back to you (other than their own good will - trust me, you don't want to rely on this)
for a cold email to be effective you need to establish some point of commonality (ie, somebody you both know, same school, fraternity, country of origin, etc). without this, they have very little motivation to get back to you...it's human nature.
think about it, they're stressed and tired and want to get out of the office as fast as humanly possible to enjoy the few moments they have to themselves. why would they want to sacrifice that precious time for somebody they don't know and offers little to nothing in return? then think about all the emails they receive each day, and how many random people cold email them asking them for the exact same thing you just did.
personally, simply shooting a random email is not enough to prompt a response 99% of the time. but if you can say you where referred to them by somebody, or know such and such person, then youre establishing - however slight - some sort of bond or relation with that person. then you are more likely to get a response.
i would advise staying away from calling yourself just a student if you have other experience, even if its not finance related. say something like "Hello, My name is Kennedy and I’m a freshmen majoring in Business at Berkeley City College. I've worked in blah and blah and I am now interested in investment banking due to blah and blah."
Horrible, how long did you work on that? It doesn't even make sense.
