Need Advice - Currently doing an internship at a small firm
I am currently doing an internship at a small firm and I want to try to move on to a BB fulltime. I was recently invited to a networking event for a BB in antoher city that would require me to take two days off work. Would asking for two days off work kill my cahnces of a full time offer at my current firm?
How would you guys handle this situation.
Just make up an excuse like someone in your family has died. Apologize profusely and I can't imagine them saying no.
I would go with an excuse, but I probably wouldn't go with a family death. I have used a "family matter/an emergency" in the past, and that seems to work. The family death is always a touchy subject for me, but a "private family matter/emergency" can be any number of things - equally important and acceptable as a quick getaway, but doesn't bring the karma death card, or involve such a morbid tone as a family death. I definitely wouldn't go with the truth considering it isn't an offer, and you may still need this boutique if this falls through. Alternatively, you know your group, and there may be other means of getting a day or 2 off - the family emergency card is definitely a good one, but not one that you want to use over and over again (of course), so play it if you need it, but if there is anything else that your group would be alright with, run with that instead. For example, my friend once worked with a group that was pretty nervous about getting sick, so when he needed a day off to interview, he played the stomach flu card, which works well in a pinch if you need a day or 2 off. As long as you haven't played it yet, it should be alright. This excuse, however, works best if it isn't terribly busy in the group. Reason, this excuse is a last minute passage to a day or 2 off, and if there is a lot going on in the group, then they may get pretty pissed or at least annoyed with you(I mean any negativity can be undone, but it will involve some work and time, and as an intern, time isn't always on your side). Again, you know your group, and the fail safe is usually the family emergency (but not a death, at least for me, though it has worked for others).

you can say you come from a extremely conservative family and your younger brother just came out of the closet, and you need to go home and help your parents deal with the news
any other excuse ideas?
Better yet, tell them you just came out of the closet and you need two days to think it over. Invite them to your place to think it over with you.
