Need Advice on IB Recruiting – Missed Spring Weeks & Worried About Summer 2026
Hey everyone,
I’m currently a first-year BBA student at a non-target and looking to transfer or restart at a target school to improve my chances of breaking into IB. Unfortunately, I missed the window for Spring Weeks and I don’t have a lot of technical knowledge yet, and now I feel like I might have also missed the queue for Summer 2026 internships at bulge bracket banks (GS, JPM, etc.).
I’m new to the IB recruiting process and still trying to figure out the best way to position myself, build experience, and apply at the right time. Given my situation, I’d really appreciate any insights on:
- Can I still apply for Spring Weeks, or is it too late? If not, going to question 2
- Do I even have time to apply for Summer 2026 internships, or is it already too late?
- If yes, When should I start applying, and how can I maximize my chances?
- If I have missed it, what alternative paths should I take to stay on track for IB?
- If I don’t manage to transfer and stay in my current 3-year degree, what’s the best strategy to break into IB? (E.g., should I do a Master’s, delay graduation, get experience elsewhere first, etc.?)
Apologies if these are basic questions—I’m just trying to navigate all this and make sure I’m on the right path. I’m fully committed to getting into IB and would really appreciate any advice from those who’ve been through this.
recommend start honing in technicals ASAP, might be bit late for Spring week for 26 but get ready for any opportunity possible. It is also doable to get SA without springweek so get ready for the recruiting season this summer.
get some sort of banking/ finance internship for this summer asap.
would recommend trasferring to target/ semi-target as UK recruiting is so random and it is hard to standout but that is ultimately up to the financial condition of your family and your plans.
how should i go about it? and any idea when i should start applying for Summer interships to maximise my chances?
SA 26 prob will start sometime late July early Aug if i gotta guess. Just keep an eye and apply asap when it opens
You missed the chance for spring weeks '25 (London)
And you missed the chance for summer '26 (NY?)
So the conclusion is clearly aim for Summer '26 in the UK
i was talking about summer '26 for the UK. But i can't find any openings as some sources say they open as early as March and others say they open in August. Which one is it? do i still have time to prep my technical skills?
Summer 2026 has not even opened yet. They open around in August. Only firm to open in March is P72 and the conversions from springs means that some people will have offers by April for 2026.
You can still go into recruiting directly for Summer '26 in August-October
Springs are like the easiest way to get summers outside of nepotism lol, but since you're in the UK the recruitment process is quite random. So would you get a spring week if you restart? Who knows! Id think of it this way, firstly - do you actually and have solidified that you want a career in banking? Secondly, How confident are you in getting a spring week? Thirdly, what are the pros and cons of delaying a year.
If you aren't sure about banking - heres another point of view. You said you'll go into a target school if you restart - if you no longer want to go into banking, would this not set you up much better for any other career paths you want to go into? e.g Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Warwick, Imperial - those have international brand name (maybe not as much for warwick) and have exclusive opportunities. It would definitely put you in much better footing for any career pathway depending on your course.
Honestly, there is no shame in restarting. I also restarted (but for academic reasons) and made a fantastic use out of my time out of uni before going back in. I could say I was so much more prepared for university, was super ready to study and make new friends, got work experience and saved up money, travelled to some countries I wanted to visit.
If you do decide to go for summer 2026. Do you have any work experience in finance? I'd try honing your technical ability, soft skills and interview technique asap etc and try get something lined up for your first year summer. With summer applications, you'd be up against almost everyone (including european master students with 5 internships under their belt) so really need to bring your A-game to assessment centres etc which is quite hard if you have nothing under your belt. Another thing to consider if what will you do if you don't land a summer?
Another option is, go for springs next year by planning to take a masters degree or extending your course (indsutrial placement etc) to 4 years. Many people do this, in their second year of a 4 year course and go for springs again.
The only real benefit of a spring week is probably if it is a pipeline programme to a summer internship. It's also much easier to score than a summer, but then again i'd say even less merit-based in a random recruiting system so in reality is it actually easier to score than a summer?
Theres probably some other scenarios.
You're absolutely right, and thanks for all those insights. Now, my worry is if I don't manage to transfer and reset, what would my next step be then? In the country I'm in, there aren't really any summer internships you can do in a big bank. Also, it's not an optimal territory for networking. Puts me in a tough spot, i'm scared I won't get accepted to a target, stay in a non-target in my local country doing a bba, and be forced to apply for summer' int'26 at BB's and get overlooked because of my profile. What would you do if you were in my position?
If you do not go to
Targets: Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL, Warwick
Or
Semi Targets: Durham, Bristol, Kings, Bath, Edinburgh, Notts and maybe Exeter
Restart. Take your A levels again if you have to.
im already applying to those as a first year in uni, im ready to restart. but what if they dont take me? im already a year late if im gonna reset. what should i do if they don't as they're very selective
What are your IB/A level grades and subjects?
