Networking at JPM

Currently a sophomore and had a call today with an As1 at JPM NY. They had mentioned multiple times that I don’t need to network there and just need to crush the hirevue. They were the first person at JPM I have talked with, but everyone at different banks have told me networking is key. Is JPMs system different or is the As completely wrong?

I corroborate the above comment. JPM is one of the sole banks that doesn't do networking/referrals for their recruiting process. GS and MS are beginning to catch on now too, with only VP+ or MD+ being able to push for candidates.

I lateraled a year ago with 0 networking and just a referral from a college buddy (an analyst). Not sure if there is still a hiring freeze. There’s also a newish process for lateral first year analysts where groups can’t recruit independently (ex. fig can’t just post a job listing for a 1st year lateral). Everyone has to come from the same pool.
