Networking for Nothing?

So everyone always talks about the importance of networking, But it seems that most SA recruiting happens with a group of Analysts/Associates sifting through hundreds of resumes and making an interview pile. So, from what I understand, the only way networking helps is if you happened to network with one of the people tasked with going through resumes? Or am I completely off about the process? Also, what is the role of MDs in the process? What is the benefit of networking with them since there is 0 chance they're the ones going through resumes
