Networking in Native Language

Going to start networking for SA26 and was wondering what people think of networking (sending the first email) in their native languages instead of English? Mainly for people from continental Europe (France, Italy, Germany etc.) Interested to hear people's opinions on this. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, networking in your native language can be a strategic move, especially in continental Europe. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Cultural Relevance: In countries like France, Italy, and Germany, professionals may appreciate communication in their native language as it shows respect for their culture and can make the interaction feel more personal.

  2. Response Rates: Emailing in the native language might increase your chances of getting a response, particularly if the recipient is not as comfortable with English or prefers local communication norms.

  3. Professional Context: If you're reaching out to international firms or professionals who operate primarily in English, sticking to English might be more appropriate. However, for local firms or professionals, using the native language could be advantageous.

  4. Personalization: Regardless of the language, ensure your email is personalized and not a generic copy-paste. Mentioning common ground or shared interests can make a significant difference.

  5. Flexibility: If you're unsure, you could start in English and switch to the native language if the recipient responds in it. This approach shows adaptability and respect for their preference.

Ultimately, the decision depends on the context of the firm, the professional's background, and the cultural norms of the country you're targeting.

How well can you speak those languages. If your fluent great do it. Look at there profiles see where they went to uni for example or high school and also what language they post in if they have any posts.

If you can’t speak that language fluently/can hold a conversation in it if you get to a coffee chat. I wouldn’t send it in native language

yes i am native in it as I grew up in one of the countries lol

can say that it works better for networking :)

Theophastus' satirical portrait of old men attempting to act like young ones ("late learners") might reflect youthful criticisms:

"At the festivals of heroes [the late learner] will match himself against boys for a torch-race....he will go into the gymnasia and try wrestling matches....Riding into the country on another’s horse, he will practice his horsemanship by the way; and, falling, will break his head.....he will have matches of archery and javelin-throwing with his children’s attendant, whom he exhorts, at the same time, to learn from him, — as if the other knew nothing about it either. At the bath he will posture frequently...and when women are near, he will practice dancing-steps, singing his own accompaniment."Theophastus' satirical portrait of old men attempting to act like young ones ("late learners") might reflect youthful criticisms:
