Non-Target 2025 SA Recruitment

I'm a rising junior (finance) at a non-target state university (Think UTennese, UofUtah, UofOregon) working an internship in asset management this summer (2nd internship on resume). I'm trying to break into a 2025 SA role at a SMALL investment bank. Any ideas or help? (Technical knowledge is up to date and have had interviews with BB (No luck)).

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps to help you break into a 2025 Summer Analyst (SA) role at a small investment bank:

  1. Leverage Your Current Internship:

    • Highlight your asset management experience on your resume, emphasizing any relevant skills and achievements.
    • Seek a recommendation from your current employer to strengthen your application.
  2. Networking:

    • Reach out to alumni from your university who are working in investment banking. Use LinkedIn to find and connect with them.
    • Attend industry events, webinars, and networking sessions to meet professionals in the field.
    • Join finance-related clubs or societies at your university to expand your network.
  3. Tailor Your Applications:

    • Customize your resume and cover letter for each application, focusing on how your skills and experiences align with the specific bank's needs.
    • Emphasize your technical knowledge and any relevant coursework or certifications.
  4. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Practice common investment banking interview questions, especially those related to technical skills and behavioral aspects.
    • Utilize resources like the WSO Investment Banking Interview Prep to refine your interview techniques.
  5. Consider Smaller Firms:

    • Apply to boutique and middle-market investment banks, which may have less competitive recruitment processes compared to bulge bracket banks.
    • Research and target firms that have a history of hiring from non-target schools.
  6. Showcase Your Determination:

    • Demonstrate your passion for investment banking through your application materials and during interviews.
    • Highlight any extracurricular activities, leadership roles, or projects that showcase your commitment and drive.
  7. Seek Feedback:

    • If you have had interviews with bulge bracket banks but were not successful, seek feedback to understand areas for improvement.
    • Use this feedback to refine your approach and better prepare for future opportunities.

By following these steps, you can enhance your chances of securing a 2025 SA role at a small investment bank. Good luck!
