Non target road to NYC: advice?

Hey wso,

I just finished my 2nd year at a no name school. I did a remote LMM PE internship for a year, am about to start a corp dev/m&a internship with a small public co. There is an acq lined up and I’m 1 of 3 people in the corp dev unit total so I think I’ll get some pretty tangible deal experience, or tangible exposure at the least. Also, I accepted a non-NYC offer for SA26 with a MM bank (HW/WB/PS etc).

My goal is to do my FT IB analyst stint in NYC. Do I have a shot in NYC FT recruiting with my (hypothetical) experience profile? Would I stand a better chance by delaying grad and rerecruiting? Thanks for any advice!

The saying "The road to NYC goes through Anchorage" exists for a reason—especially if you're from a non-target school. While there are no literal roads to NYC through Anchorage, the phrase signifies that before reaching your highest goals, you'll need to go through some intermediate steps first. For example, jumping straight to goldman associate from a non target is a stretch, but if you have a gig as an assistant branch manager at WF Anchorage first, you'd have a good shot. Success takes patience. Just don't get too fat when you're in anchorahe. a lot of people there have a problem with overeating. When I was there, I remember my manager going for 2 lunch breaks. Especially in the summer, because there is 20+ hours of daylight, "eating all day" means 5 meals. But you'll just be there for a while, so maintain a good exercise routine and you'll be fine. Best of luck.
