Non Target School- Boutique internship ----> Bulge Bracket Bank possible?

I have a more unique background. I was a college athlete (D1 non target - top 20 public university) and was unable to get internships due to having required practices in the summers. I also have played professionally in my sports for a little over a year now. I am done with sports and looking to get spring internships at smaller regional boutiques (i have a few interviews lined up). My question is if I get an internship in the spring 2016, I have to wait till july/august 2016 till analyst recruiting comes around then wait again till June/July 2017 for my analyst job to begin. Is it possible to get a job at a bulge bracket or Mid sized Bank with my background and with experience at a small regional boutique? I really want to get into banking and would prefer to work for a larger bank but I want to make sure it is possible before I end up wasting my time waiting.

You say you want to get into banking, but you also say you want to make sure it's possible to work for a larger bank before you waste your time? It sounds like you wouldn't work for a smaller bank long term if that's the only option available to you, which begs the question, do you really want to do banking? Most people that actually want to do banking will take the best they can get, even if it's a far cry from Goldman Sachs TMT in NY, or any other BB in a major city for that matter.

To answer your question, yes, I've heard it's very possible to leverage relevant experience at a smaller firm to get interviews/offers from larger ones, considering you are qualified in all other areas.
