Not on the same page with MD
Don’t feel on the same page at all with my MD. Our other analyst feels the same way on our deal team. Seems like we’re off on communication throughout this deal and I don’t have the slightest idea how I bring this up to him. It’s simple stuff, excluding his from info so we’re unaware what happened with IOIs or why certain passes, revisions on documents take weeks, and we just don’t feel on the same page.
Any way we can address this? Worried it’ll influence our current deals.
Bump - have similar sentiment when working with some people on my team as well.
As a junior banker, why do you feel you need to be kept in the loop on items unrelated to you?
This is stuff that MDs are discussing with VPs and above. I would ask your VP to keep you guys informed.
Are you an intern? 1st yr? VP? Every bank is different and deal teams are structured to the needs of the MD. I think it would have been helpful to maybe give some actual advice. If they are bringing up being out of the loop with their MD, there is most likely a reason.
I did give actual advice - your MD cannot keep every junior informed about everything, because that would be inefficient. Therefore, you should be asking for updates from the most junior person who is up to speed (e.g., the VP). I do this because this is expected from the MD.
Bump - I am in the same boat sometimes.
It would seem like a conversation where you explain your concerns and stuff you want to learn more about could help with making progress. Or you could ask your VP or associates first as they may have more detail, but a similar conversation would likely be good to help you catch up on all the details you want to learn more about on the deal process. Has happened with me recently and that’s what I would recommend.
I'll be honest here - if you communicate with a level of clarity in any way similar to this post, I am not surprised there's a disconnect.
In any case, you should give him some feedback in a constructive way. You should frame your point in a way that makes it clear you're not complaining or blaming him; but instead, you're brainstorming ways to work better together. For example, "I'd find it helpful if you keep me in the loop on the incoming IOIs. that way I can process it as it comes and churn out materials faster." or "I noticed I haven't heard back in a while on these materials. Is there anything that's not clear we should discuss?"
Managing up is an important skill to have for top performers at the junior level (some will tell you at all levels) and part of it is the ability to hold open conversations about issues like these.
