You can find pretty cheap housing around times square. Look for studios on craigslist, you can get into the sub $2000 range without too much difficulty, and even lower if you're really patient. I assume you don't mind sleeping together...

From what I remember as an intern, NYC housing at Water Street was $2200/month. You can get some pretty nice studios in FiDi for around that or a little higher.

I'll be around 50th street in midtown so Water Street in the FiDi is a bit too far I think. Thanks for the input though.
