You can find pretty cheap housing around times square. Look for studios on craigslist, you can get into the sub $2000 range without too much difficulty, and even lower if you're really patient. I assume you don't mind sleeping together...

There is usually an "emergency" dean for situations like this. Find out who that person is and go in with your girlfriend and plead your case.
From what I remember as an intern, NYC housing at Water Street was $2200/month. You can get some pretty nice studios in FiDi for around that or a little higher.
I'll be around 50th street in midtown so Water Street in the FiDi is a bit too far I think. Thanks for the input though.
