I don't mind the poor or the ethnic, but I do have to agree that NYC is pretty dirty. Not my favorite city.
I hardly see anyone 'poor' in Manhattan or Brooklyn. And if you're not exactly "walking around" if you are outside those boroughs.

Yeah NYC is pretty dirty. Not because of the people (you ass) it's just a dirty, smelly place, even around Wall.
Boston is generally cleaner/less smelly in the liveable areas (ie around the Commons, Beacon Hill, Back Bay) but it is a lot smaller. Plus, what the fuck is even in Boston? Hooray for mutual funds, I guess.
